David Huyck grew up in Chicagoland half a block from the schoolyard in one direction, and the candy store in the other direction. The playground provided emotional and physical trauma that now serve as fertile sources of inspiration, and Hollie’s Convenience Store was the source of many childhood pleasures, such as Lik-M-Aid, Pop Rocks, and root beer barrels. In the context of Saturday morning cartoons, the Muppet Show, Ed Emberly how-to-draw books, Legos, The Far Side, Calvin and Hobbes, Atari, and Nintendo, these psychological and high-fructose fuels mix to make a sticky goo at the heart of David’s artwork.
He still loves to read comics, watch cartoons, and let his imagination run rampant with his pencil and brush, and lately his imagination has also taken control of his mom's old sewing machine. Still sugar-fueled and amazingly cavity-free, David’s images and toys always have a story to tell, but what may seem innocent on first impression might not actually be so. Tread carefully.
David completed his MFA at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2007, and you can see more of his work at bunchofmonkeys.com.
